Rudy Pikuzinski - Member of Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame

 Pikuzinski Power...

There is no greater satisfaction for a professional sports fan than cheering on a home grown player, and the taste is even sweeter when the player stars for the hometown side. For eight seasons, fans of the Buffalo Blizzard had the thrill of rooting Rudy Pikuzinski on to record setting achievements in the arena of professional soccer.

A 1983 draft pick of the Buffalo Stallions, Rudy played for the team in it’s last season before joining the Major Indoor Soccer league Canton Invaders. Pikuzinski burst through to stardom with 174 goals and THREE LEAGUE MVP awards. Canton won four titles during Rudy’s Tenure. Rudy’s professional outdoor career includes over 100 goals scored for the Buffalo Storm, Toronto Italia and St. Catherines Roma.

In 1992, the road finally brought Rudy home as a member of the Buffalo Blizzard. For eight seasons Rudy was a goal-scoring treasure and an inspirational leader for his hometown team. In time, Rudy’s lethal strikes took aim at MISL career goal scoring records and on March 18, 1995, Rudy gave the record the boot with his 350th career goal before a raucous Memorial Auditorium crowd. Pikuzinski an eight time all star selection, added to his record for five more seasons and retired with league and Blizzard scoring records with 823 points and over 500 professional goals.

Statistics alone do not convey the Pikuzinski legacy. His intensity, drive and determination even in practice sessions were legendary.

Today, Rudy maintains his passion for the game through coaching and developing young players who love the game and have high aspirations. For the last 12 years, Rudy has coached thousands of young players at all levels and ages. His latest project, The Buffalo Soccer Academy Invaders ( see article here ) were ranked nationally in the top 10 and won an unprecedented five state cup championships.

Riley Bowers of Clarence center was the only player from New York West selected to the ODP national pool. Riley will participate in the ODP national camp to be held in Phoenix AZ in January to train with the top 100 players in the country. The eighth grade phenom from Clarence is the only player to be selected at a tender age of 13 from the Buffalo area in the history of the program.

The Olympic Development program is part of USYSA and US soccer and is designed to identify the top players in the country who will be trained to eventually compete for a spot on the US National/Olympic team. Riley was a member of NYW ODP 99 girls team comprised of players from Buffalo, Rochester, Binghamton and Syracuse this past year and competed against other ODP teams from Region 1 in Princeton, NJ. Region 1 encompasses the northeast area with 13 ODP teams between Main and Virginia. Following the region 1 tournament Riley attended the Region 1 ODP camp held at University of Rhode Island over five days in July of 2012.

The camp hosted approx. 500 selected players from all over the northeast region. At the conclusion of the camp Riley was one of 80 players invited to compete for a spot in the national pool. The regional pool event was held at Sahlen Sports Park Dec 6th through 8th. At the conclusion of this event Riley was one of only 25 players selected to participate in the national camp in Phoenix AZ in January. The remaining 75 players for the national camp will be invited from Region’s 2, 3 and 4 covering every state in the US.

"This achievement is a true testament to Riley’s dedication and hard work" said coach Henrik Ambarchian. "we’re very proud of Riley and her accomplishments".

Riley will be traveling throughout the country to participate in various ODP national camps in the upcoming months.
